Work Life Balance In The Work Place

When thinking of finding a job in the public relations/ communication field I am also always on the look out for positions that are offering a benefit of paid time off, the ability to work from home if needed and a great work life balance strategy. These are important things that I look at when I am thinking about deciding where I will accept a job at. Many companies are advertising the fact that they can allow their employees to be able to have that flexibility in the workplace. This is a great thing because sooner than later there will be a time when the jobs where you are stuck in an office all the time will be the ones to avoid because there are bigger and better things out there. Here is a Ted Talk about "How to make work-life balance work."

The definition of work life balance on Wikipedia is a concept including proper prioritizing between "work" (career and ambition) and "lifestyle" (health, pleasure, leisure, family and spiritual development/meditation). This is combining a lot of different aspects into the definition. When I first thought of this topic I just thought of it as that the employee gets more time off and gets to work from home but after doing the research it is a lot more involved. Here are some things that can also be involved:

  • Leaving your work at work
  • Not checking work email after hours or weekends
  • Being able to leave work early to be with children
  • Put downtime into your schedule
  • Drop activities that sap your time and energy
  • Get moving
  • Rethink errands
  • Remember relaxation goes a long way
  • Being able to schedule Dr visits during work time
These tips were from a variety of resources and detailed in the video. I think that these are great tips for all employees who also have a family or young people that are going to want a family in the future. I also think that these are great tips and ways to manage your work life balance.

These tips that I have learned and researched are something that I think all employers should have. Here are some examples of what Disney has to offer in their work life balance package.
  • Take family for free into the parks
  • Other park discounts
  • Generous benefits
  • Great training
  • And man more
Like I said before companies are getting a lot better at adding these types of benefits to their benefits package so look for them and ask about them so you will not get over stressed or over worked.
